Ontario’s Dressage riders heading to the Canadian Interprovincial Equestrian Championships in Alberta are welcoming a new team member this week following the withdrawal of one of the original short-listed riders. Eastern Equine Encephalitis Confirmed in Ontario

On Aug. 16, 2013, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) was notified of a confirmed case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in one horse in Simcoe County. The 11-year-old gelding had an incomplete vaccination history and no history of travel outside the county. The horse exhibited acute onset of depression and fever, with some neurological signs; he is reported to be recovering following supportive treatment. Potomac Horse Fever Cases in Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food has become aware of two cases of Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) in Ontario as of early August 2013. Samples collected from an anorexic and febrile horse in Essex County confirmed that the horse was suffering from PHF. The horse subsequently died. A horse in the Ottawa area also tested positive for PHF. It was exhibiting profuse watery diarrhea but is reported to be recovering. If you are competing at Equine Canada sanctioned competitions, please be advised of rule changes prohibiting the practice of using injectable magnesium, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) or hydroxy-gamma butyric acid (hydroxyl-GABA). These rule revisions, which have been adopted and are effective immediately, empower EC licensed officials to take action if they personally witness the injection or attempted injection of a horse.
